DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone)

DHEA is a naturally occurring hormone and either exert benefits on its own or can convert into both testosterone or estrogen depending on the body's need. DHEA supplementation may be potent for reducing the effects of ageing.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is found in large amounts in the human body. Together with its sulfated form (DHEA-S), DHEA is the most common type of steroid hormone. In fact, the average amount of DHEA-S in the blood is about 10,000 times higher than the amount of estradiol, which is the most powerful estrogen (estradiol levels are around 0.1 ng/mL, while DHEA-S levels are around 1000 ng/mL). DHEA is made by the adrenal glands, brain, ovaries, and testes from cholesterol. It is a precursor to the major sex steroids (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone). DHEA is sometimes referred to be the "anti-aging hormone" or even the "fountain of youth," therefore it should come as no surprise that supplementation with DHEA to its mid-normal biologically youthful levels appears to instil a sense of well-being and restore vitality.

When you are in your mid-20s, your DHEA-S levels are at their highest. By the time you are 70, they have slowly gone down to about 20%. Once DHEA levels start to go down, there are no feedback mechanisms that can help bring them back up. As DHEA and its metabolites decrease, the protective effects of sex steroids on the brain wear off. This makes the brain more vulnerable to the neurotoxic effects of cortisol and other factors that could hurt it. When DHEA-S levels go down, cortisol levels stay the same, so the cortisol/DHEA-S ratio goes up. The unbalanced relationship between too much cortisol and not enough DHEA-S is so bad that it can make the hippocampus vulnerable to damage and contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, brain imaging studies show that the lower levels of DHEA-S are closely linked to the fact that the hippocampi don't work as well in people with Alzheimer's disease.

This is why DHEA is often given to both male and female patients who have low androgen symptoms along with low DHEA-S and/or testosterone levels. DHEA replacement therapy can definitely slow down the effects of aging. This is because the right amount of DHEA helps boost the levels of sex hormones that come after it, makes it easier to deal with stress, increases libido, improves the ratio of body fat, and boosts the immune system. During supplementation, it is important to keep an eye on the levels of both sex steroid hormones and DHEA-S. Just like too little DHEA can cause bothersome symptoms, too much DHEA (and/or DHEA-S) can too.

Supplementation of DHEA appears to be effective in persons over 40 in the dosage range of 25-50 mg, while prolonged usage of 100 mg appears to be safe in this demographic. While the usage of DHEA in young persons for the purpose of testosterone enhancement is not clear, it tends to be used at 200mg for this purpose

DHEA may not be an approved substance for several sports leagues and organizations, and is currently on the WADA prohibited substances list; please check with your Australian authoritative body of your organization before using DHEA supplementation

DHEA and Men's Health

Erectile Dysfunctions

Because it has androgenic properties, DHEA helps with erectile dysfunction. DHEA improves the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, as well as sexual function, desire, and overall satisfaction. DHEA works well for men with idiopathic erectile dysfunction or high blood pressure. However, DHEA doesn't help men with diabetes or neurological disorders who have erectile dysfunction. For erectile dysfunction, the daily dose of DHEA is 50 mg.

Cardiovascular Health

DHEA helps men lose weight, lowers inflammation, and speeds up their metabolism. It also lowers the risk of heart disease in men. A 2003 study published in the "Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand" found that one of the main ways to lower the risk of heart disease was to lower inflammation in the body. High density lipoprotein, which is often called "good cholesterol," is said to go down when DHEA is taken. When taking DHEA as a supplement, keep a close eye on your levels.

DHEA VS DHEAS

DHEAS is DHEA that has been sulfated. When providers call, they often want to know what the difference is between DHEA and DHEAS. The two molecules are different because one of them has a sulfate group and the other doesn't. DHEAS is the sulfated form of DHEA. The sulfated form of DHEA makes up about 98% of the DHEA in the bloodstream (DHEA-S). DHEA-S binds to albumin, its carrier protein, more strongly than DHEA does. This is one reason why DHEA-S is removed from the bloodstream more slowly by metabolism [7]. In addition to having a longer biological half-life, DHEAS does not have a strong diurnal rhythm like cortisol and DHEA, nor does it change from day to day [8]. Also, the levels of DHEAS are the same as those of DHEA, and they are very close to the clinical symptoms of too little or too much androgen.

So, DHEA-S is a more stable measure of adrenocortical activity and stress over time, while DHEA may be a better measure of how the body reacts to sudden stress. So, when we measure DHEA-S, we find out how much DHEA is stored in the body's biological system as a whole. All of these things make DHEA-S the best choice for molecular testing.

DHEA with sulfate and without
Both DHEA and DHEA-S molecules have major physiological effects on the body when it comes to how they work. People may not think about the actions of DHEA and DHEA-S in the nervous system, which is what I want to talk about.

Effects on Depression

When it comes to DHEA and depression, there is still a lot we don't know. A review done in 2014 found some evidence that DHEA may help treat mild depression or depression that doesn't respond to other treatments. But the researchers came to their conclusions based on three small studies.

Before we can come to any firm conclusions, we need to do more research with more people.

Bone Density and Muscle Mass

DHEA has anti-aging effects that help prevent bone loss and reduce the risk of breaking bones or getting osteoporosis. People with thyroid or autoimmune disorders, poor diets, sedentary lifestyles, eating disorders, and hormonal imbalances are more likely to lose bone than people who are just getting older.

Some evidence suggests that higher levels of DHEA increase the production of estrogen, which leads to stronger bones in older women or women who have gone through menopause. Bone problems are most likely to happen to these women.

Since sports groups like the NCAA put DHEA supplements on their list of things that aren't allowed, there has been a lot of pushback. DHEA is not a synthetic steroid or a performance-enhancing drug that causes muscles to grow in an abnormal way. In reality, it works more like a repair signal that helps the body get back to normal after a lot of exercise and training. It helps cells take in glucose for energy, helps the metabolism do many different things, and stops fat from building up, especially dangerous visceral fat.

Fat Loss

Body Fat Reduction

DHEA may also help you get rid of body fat and gain lean body mass. Since DHEA can raise testosterone levels, which is important for building muscle, you may see an increase in lean body mass. Nutrasanus.com says that studies have shown that DHEA can lower the total amount of fat in the body. KCweb.com says that blocking an enzyme called G6PD can help the body burn calories for energy instead of storing them as fat. This enzyme is not only necessary for making fat, but it also makes cancer cells grow faster. By stopping this enzyme, you can reduce the amount of fat in your body.

Improves Libido

DHEA has helped many people overcome sexual dysfunctions, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, and menopause symptoms such as vaginal dryness, despite not being foolproof or risk-free of side effects. Over the years, study results have been mixed, but some research shows that men with erectile dysfunction have lower levels of DHEA. Some studies show that both men and women can benefit from taking DHEA supplements when their sex hormones start to drop.

Low testosterone and hormone deficiency in men, which is sometimes called partial androgen deficiency, can cause problems like aches, pains, weight gain, loss of function, and sexual problems. However, some research suggests that taking 25 milligrams of DHEA every day for a year might help improve these symptoms.

Other evidence shows that taking DHEA for six months can help reduce sexual problems like impotence that are caused by nerve damage or diabetes. Women who take 10 to 25 milligrams of DHEA every day might find that their hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and weight gain get better.

DHEA and Pregnancy

The Relationship Between Dehydroepiandrosterone and Fertility

There is a close connection between dehydroepiandrosterone and fertility. Studies have shown that DHEA can help increase the chances of having a child in a number of ways over time. Hormone supplements have been shown to make ovaries respond better to fertility drugs, increase the chance of getting pregnant, and make more oocytes.

DHEA may also lower the risk of birth defects in babies. But the problem is that this hormone can't be found in any common food in enough amounts to change the way fertility works.

The Science Behind DHEA Supplements: Women with Infertility

Taking DHEA supplements for infertility can help you have a child in more than one way. Here are some ways that this hormone might help people who are having trouble getting pregnant.

In one study, it was found that when women took DHEA supplements, their chances of getting pregnant through IVF were twice as high as when they didn't.

A 2013 study showed that DHEA can make it more likely for a woman to get pregnant on her own.

Women who take DHEA supplements may also have more eggs and better quality eggs and embryos.

Using DHEA might also make it less likely that a pregnancy will end early or that the baby will have problems with its chromosomes.

DHEA Supplements for Male Infertility

Many people say that DHEA can slow down the aging process and help men become more fertile, but this is not true. In this article, we talked about how this hormone can help men's bodies make more testosterone. DHEA does more than just this to a man's body, though. It can also cause the body of a man to make less sperm.

Scientists often say that men who use DHEA are doing the same thing as those who use anabolic steroids. It can have an effect on the body for up to 6 months, and it can lower the quality and number of sperm. It could also cause the testicles to get smaller. So, men who want to make their partner pregnant shouldn't take this hormone.

    Noticeable results

I started taking DHEA because my levels were really low and I was suffering from chronic fatigue associated with high cortisol levels. After only a few days of taking DHEA I started to see a noticeable improvement in my energy and quality of sleep. I don't know yet whether it's doing all the other things I expect of it - improved bone density, better insulin sensitivity, enhanced immune system - but I hope it's having an effect.
